The Holding Pattern
Picture this: I’m strapped into the pilot’s seat of five shiny new projects, ready to take off. But instead of soaring into the sky, I’m stuck circling the runway because air traffic control (aka my clients) haven’t given me clearance.
“Any updates?”
“Just waiting on feedback.”
Repeat, repeat, repeat.
The “All at Once” Phenomenon
Here’s the kicker: feedback doesn’t trickle in gently. Oh no. The universe has a sense of humor. After weeks of silence, every single client will email me within the same 48-hour window.
And suddenly I’m juggling five “urgent” to-do lists, all stamped with: Need this fixed today, thanks!
The Mental Ping-Pong
The worst part? The mental gymnastics of half-finished projects. My brain is constantly bouncing between them like a ping-pong ball:
“Did I send them that draft?”
“Oh wait, no, I’m waiting on their logo.”
“But hang on, wasn’t I supposed to change that heading?”
Basically, my brain is a browser with 72 tabs open, and every single one is frozen.
The Polite Nag
Of course, chasing feedback is its own delicate art. Too soon, and you’re a pest. Too late, and your calendar implodes. So you send that perfectly worded “Just touching base…” email — knowing full well you’ll be ignored until their real deadline looms.
The Punchline
So here I sit, five projects deep, twiddling my thumbs and refreshing Gmail like it owes me money. Because one day soon, those inbox tumbleweeds will be replaced with a flood of “Sorry for the delay! Can you turn this around ASAP?”
And of course, I’ll say yes. Because that’s the game.
